Abstract

The primary goal of this study is to improve the understanding about the mantle sources and the mechanisms involved in the basalt genesis from Paraná Magmatic Province (PMP), as well as find out their relationships with the alkaline magmatism that surround the Paraná Basin. Therefore, the determination of Re-Os isotopic compositions in these rocks, along with lithophile element isotopic systems (Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd, U-Th-Pb), is fundamental to understand: (1) the genetic relationships between the tholeiitic and alkaline magmatism, since both seem to be related to the enriched mantle I component; (2) the mantle source characteristics involved in the igneous activity; (3) the key influences of both continental crustal interaction and interaction with SCLM materials during transit of primary magmas through these reservoirs on their way to eruption at the surface; (4) if eclogites and/or pyroxenites of low melting temperature may have played some role in the magmatism generation; (5) the influence of metasomatic processes in the mantle source, since these events generate enrichments in lithophile elements (Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd, U-Th-Pb), but do not affect significantly Re-Os isotopic systematics; (6) the role of Tristan da Cunha mantle plume in the PMP genesis. To achieve the proposed goal will be necessary to optimize the 187Re-187Os analytical routine at the Centro de Pesquisas Geocronológicas, Universidade de São Paulo, since this methodology has not been routinely performed for two reasons: (1) due to the lack of researchers to devote to the analytical procedure; (2) high demand of the mass spectrometers, which prevented the exclusive dedication of the equipment in negative thermal ionization mode for such analyzes. This postdoctoral proposal is inserted in the research project from the FAPESP (2012/06082-6).
