In recent decades, the grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench.) has shown a significant increase in productivity and planted area in Brazil, becoming a key role as an energy alternative for animal feed. On the other hand, few studies have investigated the contamination of grain by fumonisin and mycotoxins and fall when it comes to analyzing the problem on a technical standpoint, as an example, the investigation of grains in different maturity stages and the interference of different sowing periods. Given the importance of the topic, this project will conduct a detailed study on the occurrence of fungi and mycotoxin (fumonisins and tenuazonic acid) in different maturity stages of grain sorghum, from anthesis to harvest, and two sowing dates (Nov/12; Feb /13). Moreover, climatological data will correlate critical moments of the crop to be carefully observed to obtain adequate grains for human and animal consumption. In addition, a polyphasic study will be realize with strains of Phoma spp., genus that show high incidence in grains of sorghum, involving morphological characters, partial sequencing 3 regions (ITS, ²-TUB and ACT), and enzyme profiles will be evaluate. These results will contribute with important information about distribution of fungi and mycotoxin in grains of sorghum, greater susceptibility stages of culture and on improvement of knowledge of species belong to Phoma complex.
