Abstract

Environmental problems caused by packaging based of non-biodegradable plastic have provoked a significant increase in studies on the films based in biopolymers. However, these films have limitations on their properties, mainly due to the sensitivity to relative humidity of ambient. Among the alternatives studied to improve the characteristics of these materials, the use of nanoparticles, with emphasis on montmorilonite, could be interesting but it has problems of dispersion in water. Another interesting nanoparticle is the laponite, which is synthetic nanoclay. The objective of this project is the development of films based on biopolymers (gelatin, collagen or starch) reinforced with a nanoparticle (laponite). It is intended to study the effect of concentration of laponite and two production methods, besides the quality of the nanoparticle dispersion, on the major physical properties of the films, with particular interest in surface properties. The films will be prepared by dehydration of film forming solutions (SFF), with the following formulations: 4 and 8 g collagen or gelatin/100 g SFF, or 2 and 4 g cassava starch/100 SFF g; 0, 1.5, 3 , 4.5 laponite/100g gelatin and 30g glycerol/100g gelatin. The quality of the dispersion of nanoparticles will be studied by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, and also, by determining the dimensions and the zeta potential of nanoparticles. The films will be characterized to knowledge of its main physical properties, with particular interest in those related to surface properties such as brightness, wettability (contact angle) and surface microstructure. Other characterizations, as crystallinity, mechanical properties, water vapor permeability, solubility, phase transitions and sorption isotherms will be made to have a better knowledge of the properties of nanostructured films.
