Intralinguistic and interlinguistic variations in idioms

Abstract

It will be studied idioms that have a rich synonymic network at the core of a language and between different languages or variants of the same language, aiming to analyze the latent variations in this conjunct of units considered stable. The corpus will consist of entries and respective equivalents listed in the Dicionário de expressões idiomáticas português do Brasil e de Portugal - francês da França, da Bélgica e do Canadá (Dictionary of Brazilian and European Portuguese - French, Belgian French and Canadian French idioms). Under this perspective of equivalences and based on works that underlie only the relative structural and semantic stabilization of the idioms, we will first study the intralinguistic equivalences that occur in Brazilian Portuguese, in European Portuguese, in two European French variants (from France and Belgium) and in Canadian French. The second part of this research proposes to detect and contrast the most relevant cultures contained in the idioms of the two languages mentioned above and their variants. It will be focused the cultural elements responsible for the generation of idioms considered synonyms. Thus we aim to raise the main cultures or diverse historical, religious, and cultural experiences that lead to the production of equivalent expressions within the same language and the intercultural relations that exist between Portuguese language idioms (Brazilian and European variants), between equivalent expressions referring to the French language (French, Belgian and Québécois variants) and between idioms in French that are equivalents to idioms in Portuguese. Therefore, we will be able to truly confirm if the existence of diverse cultures leads to a significant difference in the phraseological formulation of idioms. (AU)
