Analysis of phraseologisms in Portuguese language dictionaries: issues to pedagogic lexicography and to phraseologic lexical pedagogy

Abstract

Natural languages have thousands of phraseologisms, including the so called Idiomatic Expressions (IE) and Proverbs. These metaphorical combinations provide elements that reveal important cultural aspects of their linguistic community. Portuguese language is a natural language and the linguistic variant emphasized in this research is the one spoken in Brazil (BP). Some researches, however, reveal the inadequacies of dictionaries with respect to the recording of these linguistic units, as well as the inadequacy of the definitions provided. In this sense, this research aims, on the one hand, to carry out a diachronic investigation of the combinations that figure in the entries of the Portuguese lexical units "pé" and "mão" registered in Portuguese dictionaries of the 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. On the other hand, this research will have another development, aiming at a contrastive analysis of the metaphors that underlie some phraseological combinations with the Portuguese-Italian pair of lexical units pé/piede and mão/mano, in order to contribute both to Pedagogical Lexicography and to monolingual and bilingual Lexical Pedagogy.
