The emotions in Italian and Portuguese body idiomatic expressions: an onomasiological analysis based on metaphors

Abstract

This research aims to study idiomatic expressions (IEs) which were created from some lexical units that, in some way, allude to the body and are linked to the semantic field of emotions, by contrasting Italian with Brazilian Portuguese. Metaphor and metonymy processes are implied in the conceptualization of emotion, which reveal cultural patterns. In such context, we aim to investigate in which way the emotional concepts are represented in Italian in contrast to Brazilian Portuguese, through metaphors and metonymy implied in the IEs that originated them, trying to identify equality, similarity and differences. Thus, we hypothesize that emotions would not be only associated to the lexical field of heart as it was conventionally established in occidental cultures, but that they could also comprehend other lexical units, which on the human body. The objective of this study was pursued based on theoretical conjectures of Lexicology, Lexicography, Phraseology and mainly Cognitive Semantics, due to the cognitive approach used in this research. The main theoretical references and methodology that led this research were Dirven (2003), Enfield and Wierzbicka (2002), Kövecses (2000, 2005, 2010), Lakoff (1987) and Lakoff and Johnson (2002). To structure the corpus, the data analyzed was verified using monolingual dictionaries in Italian and general dictionaries of Brazilian Portuguese. In addition, the web was used as textual basis. In order to easily compare the idiomatic expressions between the languages, they were organized in a corpus - a repertory of body IEs - according to onomasiologic view. Furthermore, images schemas were studied, emphasizing metaphors and metonymy patterns implied in IEs, and consequently, to emotional concepts. (AU)
