Abstract

The configuration of the urban space has been object of great transformations throughout time, fruit of historical, social, economic, and cultural factors. Facing the increasing process of urbanization and among different patterns of expansion, the city presents new manifestations and specialties of its urban territory, misconfiguring traditional characterizations given to new forms of representation. Changes and new spatial configurations determined by social, cultural, and economic questions, increase the implementation of private enterprises, as it is the case of closed gated communities once the concepts on well-being, entertainment, status, and security are articulated. This research project has the objective of studying recent processes of urbanization that condition the transformation of the urban space. Specifically, the dynamics of privatization processes in the urban space, like close gated communities, that interfere in the configuration of new spatialities of the contemporary city. The city, confronted by new and problematic interpretations, asks for the revision of actions and interventions in its special resultants, in particular with the relation of its public spaces. In this context, revising and complementing the previous research, using as a case study the cities of São Carlos and Ribeirão Preto, this research articulates itself along with three others in the investigation of recent processes of urbanization in cities of the western region of the state of São Paulo and the transformations of the public space.
