Abstract The study approaches the theme of the gated communities, glaringly as a real estate product with great impact in the Brazilian urban landscape in recent decades, linked to new forms of consumption of the city and urban space production (which runs through the redefinition of the public and private realm). The paper studied the capital Palmas, which will analyze the process of urbanization and the inclusion of gated communities in the context of a planned city.Gated communities represent how social relations and the vision of the city as a shared space, have changed over the time, crystallizing the growing social inequalities. This study aims to understand the specifics of Palmas in relation to gated communities (inclination of the typology, size, income level, location, relevant legislation, etc.) and analyze what the extent of privatization of urban space, analogous to logic of the gated communities.Gated communities and private spaces are manifestations of contemporary society: the walls only materialize the existing segregation. This relationship can be felt in some designed blocks from Tocantins' capital, where there is the appropriation of public space by certain users, which doesn´t mean that the significance of the place is a democratic and accessible space. The intention is to understand to what extent the original design of the city in their gaps, enables the formation of 'private' blocks in Palmas, to privatize and segregate areas within the city. | |
