Comparison of the effects of two protocols of hydration on the autonomic modulation and cardiorespiratory parameters in young healthy exercise and recovery

Abstract

Hydration plays a key role in maintaining physiological functions required by the exercise. However little is known about the effects that the replacement water based and isotonic beverage base promotes the behavior of the autonomic nervous system and cardiorespiratory parameters during prolonged exercise. Thus, the objective was to compare the effects of ingestion of water and sports drink on indices of heart rate variability and cardiorespiratory parameters in apparently healthy young adults during and after endurance exercise. Thirty healthy young active between 18 and 25 years, will hold four visits to the laboratory (48-hour interval between them), the first one applied an incremental test to determine the load treadmill to be used on subsequent visits, and three latest, called protocol control (PC) and experimental protocols (PH1 and PH2), subjects will undergo 10 min of supine rest, 90 min of treadmill exercise (60% VO2peak) and 60 min of supine rest. In PC individuals are not hydrated in PH1 they will be hydrated with water during and after exercise, every 15 min from the beginning, being proportional to the amount ingested body mass lost on PC and PH2 are hydrated with drink isotonic. To ensure the condition of initial hydration should individuals ingesting 500 ml of water two hours before the PC PH1 and PH2, and to assess the condition of hydration after PH1 and PH2, the participants are instructed to bring in urine and analyzing the marker specific gravity. The parameters heart rate (HR), systolic and diastolic blood pressure, respiratory rate and oxygen saturation will be measured throughout the experiment. HR variability is calculated by linear methods (SDNN, RMSSD, LF, HF, LF / HF) and nonlinear (Poincaré plot). Student t test or Mann-Whitney test and ANOVA for repeated measures or Friedman test followed by post hoc tests with significance level of 5% will be used for data analysis. (AU)
