Functional capacity of patients with chronic obstruction to flow applied training with oscilatory pole

Abstract

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is characterized by chronic airflow obstruction, reduced aerobic capacity, hyperinflation, and changes in mechanical ventilation, leading to severe dyspnea and accessory muscle use. These changes mean that patients with COPD have increased ventilatory demand leading to chronic inactivity, deconditioning, and decreased quality of life. These patients can benefit from strength training an oscillating pole can be a tool used for this purpose. Thus the aim of this research is to evaluate the effects of cardiopulmonary functional capacity in a program of strength training with the oscillating pole in patients with chronic airflow obstruction. Fifteen patients with COPD diagnosis will be assessed, who will get through initial assessment, spirometry, manovacometry, stress test, six-minute walk test, incremental shuttle walking test, grip strength test, and 1 repetition maximum. Subsequently, patients will undertake activities proposed, according to a specific protocol, for 8 consecutive weeks, with 2 weekly sessions of 30 minutes duration composed of 5 strength exercises. The data passed of Shapiro-Wilk normality test and were compared before and after training using the paired t-test (normal distribution) or Wilcoxon test (non-normal distribution). Whereas oscillatory pole therapy has not been studied in patients obstructively, we believe that the results can be disseminated in National or International Scientific Meeting. Furthermore, we believe that we can submit the results of this research in national or international scientific journals in the Physical Therapy field. (AU)
