Dragonflies and damselflies are known by their beautiful coloration patterns and complex behaviors. Although recent evidences have shown how wings structural colors and pigments may influence on their behavior, the evolution of these traits and its evolutionary relationship have not been studies yet. As libélulas são conhecidas pelos seus belíssimos padrões de coloração e comportamentos complexos. The present project has as main objective the construction of a molecular phylogeny for the Neotropical groups of Odonata, in order to study the evolution of the interaction between morphological and behavioral traits, besides providing novel data on the evolution of South American taxa. The expected results will give some perspective on the evolution of wing coloration in Odonata and its relation with the evolution of reproductive and territorial behavior. These results will bring important contributions, not only for the comprehension of the evolution of Neotropical groups, but to Odonata as a whole. The results obtained may also provide data on the plasticity of morphological and behavioral characters, on the evolution of sexual selection and improve current morphologic-behavioral classification systems. Finally, new techniques for the study of insect morphology are going to be, providing innovative results and revealing these new methods to the Brazilian scientific community. All the results will be published in specialized journals and, possibly, in other print, digital and online media. (AU)
