Abstract

The objective of this project is to analyze the functioning and dynamics of the transport of sugar between 1759 and 1807 in the "Capitania" of Pernambuco. Assuming that there was a separation between the transport business and merchandise business of sugar and therefore the mercantile groups who commanded the two operations, we intend to build series of loads of sugar and freight through the systematization of loads maps vessels contained in the documentation of Project Rescue Baron of Rio Branco. Also we intend to quantify the total vessels and sugar carried by each, the number of trips per vessel, the names of the captains for boat and ship owners, seeking to identify groups merchant who worked in the transportation business. This analysis will discuss possible ruptures and continuities and different junctures in the two classes of business, contributing to a better understanding of commercial sugar chain and the organization of communities of Portuguese merchants in the Atlantic.
