Abstract

Although the brown brocket deer (Mazama gouazoubira) is a widely distributed species in different biomes of Brazil, little is known about your ability to adapt to landscapes with intensive agriculture or forestry. This study's main objective is to contrast the probability of occupation of the landscape by the brown brocket deer inside and outside conservation areas and buffer zones, identifying the environmental covariates that are influencing this occupation. For this, the data will be collected through the use of camera traps and detection of tracks and feces inside and around conservation areas, located in the northeast of Sao Paulo state. Data analysis to determine the probability of detection and occupancy will be done using the freely available software PRESENCE, modeling the environmental covariates and selecting the most parsimonious model for estimating the detection and occupation of M. gouazoubira in the study area. This study is relevant to understand the adaptability of this species of deer, which plays an important role as seed disperser in Neotropical forests and savannas, to environments where land use has been severely altered by human actions. The study also contributes to better understand the importance of buffer-zones of protected areas, as there are few empirical studies quantifying the impact of these areas on native fauna. (AU)
