Abstract

The family Squalidae comprises two genera of sharks, Squalus and Cirrhigaleus, whose species have a complex taxonomy due to the difficulty of morphological distinction between them, associated to an uncertainty in relation to the application of many nominal species, calling up for a taxonomic revision. Therefore, a taxonomic revision of the family has been developed in order to globally delimitate the valid species, clinching the nomenclature of the nominal species for each genus. A morphological revision will provide efficient taxonomic characters for distinction among the recognized species through a detailed analysis of both external and skeletal morphology. Cranial and external measurements have been taken as well as dissections, clearing and staining, and radiographs have been achieved. At the present, 700 specimens of the family from the Northwestern and Southeastern Atlantic Northeastern and Southwestern Pacific and Indian Oceans were analyzed. Specimens from regions such as Mediterranean, Black and Red Seas as well as type specimens from the nominal species held in the European institutions were not yet investigated. The current proposal, which is related to my PhD project, aims to accomplish a research internship during three months at the Natural History Museum (NHM) in London in order to analyze comparatively relevant series of specimens of the genera and the type material held at the Ichthyology collection. Loan material will be requested besides short visits to other institutions in Europe may be achieved for obtaining more representation of the family. (AU)
