Abstract

The term Information Curation has appeared oftenly in scientific and informal discussions on the Internet. The "Encontros com o Futuro", conducted by the Grupo de Pesquisa em Comunicação, "Jornalismo e Mídias Digitais" at ECA-USP (2011) and" Rumos Cultural Journalism", held by Itaú Cultural (2012), and" Possible Futures: Art, Museums and Archives Digital" seminars, which took place in FAU, are some examples of events where the theme was recently discussed in Brazil. Despite the different approaches, these examples showed that the proliferation of the term and the emergence of this field of study is directly related to the need for new ways of filtering data in existing digital networks, raising questions of whether, by means of existing search engines, this curation is indeed possible to be exercised. In specialized websites on the topic, not related to the practices of artistic curation, as Content Curation World, it is noticed that they privilege to study tools geared to increase loyalty and audience, which converges to an understanding of curation limited to algorithms' power and encouraging an approach limited to a possible "data social darwinism" (Beiguelman, 2011). In contrast to this approach, aligned with the need to think of new ways of filtering existing data, the purpose of this research is the analysis of works of media art that are designed with the selection of data on the web and can act as methodological and conceptual parameters for new practices of Information Curation.
