Abstract

In recent years the characteristics of new materials, allied to extreme working conditions and energy efficiency/fuel, has made engineering structures operate increasingly in fully nonlinear regime. Thus, the dynamic analysis of these structures had incorporated sophisticated tools that allowed to identify the intrinsic characteristics which allow to know and predict the behavior of non-linear systems.Furthermore, about having problems detecting damage in structures, two approaches have been studied: (1) to consider that the structure operates under the condition of excitement and also a condition that allows a good approximation to a linear model, but in the existence of a structural damage to the system, it would operate in a non-linear way; metrics and various methods have demonstrated success in this form of analysis, (2) Considers that a structure even in the reference condition (healthy) already operates on a non-linear way, before and after damage. The condition (2) is much more complex, since the conventional damage linear metric detection may alert to the nucleation of structural damage, even if the system is not damaged at all. This paper intends to investigate experimentally using proper laboratory situations and equipment where the non-linear behavior of structures might mistakenly infer situation alerts for structural damage and present, through a simple data, on how metrics involving such as prediction errors of Volterra's series can be useful in various cases of damage detection in non-linear systems.
