Effect of topical and oral treatment with simvastatin in healing of partial transection of the Achilles tendon

Abstract

The Achilles tendon is a common site of injury. The healing process in the tendon usually results in a less organized extracellular matrix which reduces its tensile strength and makes the tendon more vulnerable to recurrence of ruptures. Different treatments are applied in an effort to expedite the repair. The statins are drugs used to treat hypercholesterolemia - high levels of cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and VLDL-cholesterol in blood. These drugs have been the subject of many studies showing that many of the clinical benefits associated with statins are independent of reducing levels of LDL-cholesterol. These effects, said pleiotropic have been studied seeking a possible use of these drugs in the treatment of other diseases such as, for example, in the recovery of fractures and in wound healing because of its anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and angiogenic effects. Whereas there is no data in the literature regarding the effects of statins on tendon healing in this study, we propose to evaluate the effects of topical and oral treatment with simvastatin in the Achilles tendon partially sectioned. For this purpose, male Wistar rats are treated with statins for 7 and 21 days after injury and their Achilles tendons will be collected for morphological, biochemical and functional analysis.
