Abstract

Pediatric Bipolar Disorder (BDP) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are psychiatric illnesses that cause impairment to children and to their families. Both disorders have the presence of impulsive behaviors as clinical presentation. There are no studies evaluating whether there are impulsivity characteristics that are specific to each disorder and their comorbidity. General Objective: to assess aspects of impulsivity in children and adolescents diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder (BD), ADHD, and the comorbidity BD + ADHD comparing them with the control group, using the Scale Impulsiviness de Barratt (Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, BIS).Methods: 75 participants will be assessed through a diagnostic interview K-SADS-PL to generate axis I psychiatric diagnoses according to the DSM-IV. The instrument that will be used to evaluate impulsiveness will be the BIS11 scale. The BIS 11 is a scale composed of 30 self-assessment items related to the manifestations of impulsivity, based on the theoretical model proposed by Ernst Barratt. We will include children aged 11 to 17 years and 11 months. The clinical groups will be composed of children diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and ADHD. In the control group, children without any psychiatric diagnosis of axis I of DSM-IV will be included. Statistical analyses: we will adopt the value of p 0.05 to test the hypotheses. We will initially apply to each group the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to verify the assumption of normality. If the data are normally distributed, the ANCOVA method with age and sex as covariates will be used in order to compare the scores of the BIS 11 scale among the groups. Then we will perform a pairwise comparison.(AU)
