Abstract

After the establishment of the portuguese Holy Office, the episcopal power of judging heresy was threatened, since, in spite of the ancient episcopal right to inquire about these crimes, the Inquisition tried to overcome such prerogative. An example of this jurisdiction conflict was the case of D. Frei Bartolomeu dos Mártires, Archbishop of Braga from 1559 to 1582, who developed a type of alternative way in what concerns the healing of souls and the standardization of faith. The dominican defended the so called princípio da correção fraterna, based on the Gospel of Matthew 18,15 and on Sanit Thomas Aquinas' comments about the text, which constituted an attempt to reintegrate the heretic to the community and was used by theologians and bishops who wanted to oppose themselves to the inquisitorial advance, as Friar Bartolomeu. In accordance with the moment of valorization of the episcopal power and rise of a new model of bishop after the third stage of the Council of Trent, to which D. Frei Bartolomeu dos Mártires cooperated significantly, the Archbishop defended in his writings different methods from those used by the Holy Office and, as we believe, applied these ideas in his pastoral activity as a way to secure his authority.
