Abstract

In this project we will carry out total scattering experiments of X-rays and / or neutrons in Fe pnictides superconductors and relaxor ferroelectrics, analyzing the results by the method of pair distribution function (PDF). This technique allows the investigation of the atomic structure of short and medium range, comparing it to that obtained by conventional X-ray and/or neutrons diffraction and EXAFS analyses. In the case of Fe-based superconductors, we intend to investigate comparatively the effects of substitution of transition metals M in the atomic structure of short and medium range family BaFe2-xMxAs2, trying to correlate these properties with the occurrence of superconductivity for different substitutions. For the case of relaxor ferroelectrics, we intend to obtain information about the local structure at the nanometer scale for the system Pb1-xLaxZr1-yTiyO3, trying to identify the presence of nanosized polar regions that could lead to the intriguing observed electrical behavior. In addition to reaching a better understanding of the physics of these families of materials, in this project we intend to contribute to the optimization of the instrumentation and methodology employed in the measurements of total scattering and PDF analysis by using the facilities of the new XDS beamline (x-ray diffraction and spectroscopy) of LNLS, also using other open facilities around the world when required. We also intend to analyze diffraction measurements of X-rays by conventional methods (such as Rietveld method) and perform experiments and analysis of EXAFS (Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure), completing an extensive structural analysis of these materials, which has already begun in previous projects.
