Abstract

The aural plaque is a cosmopolitan disease in distribution that causes discomfort to the animals and economical losses to the owners. Seven types of Equus caballus papillomavirus (EcPV) have been identified. Four of them were associated with aural plaque, EcPV3, 4, 5 e 6. Even though the lesions do not regress spontaneously, a previous study demonstrated success on treating aural plaques with imiquimod cream 5%. However, this study was performed previously the association of the EcPVs with aural plaque in horses; for that reason, any studies that detect the presence of de viral DNA after treatment have been done yet. Therefore, the aim of this study is to verify the presence of the EcPV1-7 DNA by PCR in samples of aural plaques before and after the treatment of the lesions with imiquimod, as well as to evaluate the treatment efficiency clinically.
