Environmentalization on university: the view from UFSCar's students to environmental issues

Abstract

This project aims to analyze the level of environmental university community from Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCAR) through the student's view, more specifically on the courses of Chemistry and Education, using a virtual tool the "Information Platform, Awareness and Sustainability Assessment in University".The platform was developed through a partnership between the University of São Paulo and the Autonomous University of Madrid (2009-2011), with the purpose promoting participation of the community university for self-assessment of their actions in such fields as management, education (curriculum), research and extension.The Environmental Education (EE) in Latin America has been strengthened last decades, from different perspectives, in order to identify potential socio environmental problems and reverse them. The Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) carry the great responsibility in the formation of people contributing to environmental sustainability.The UFSCar was pioneer of the creation of a Special Coordinator for Environment and attended in the Network Project ACES (Environmentalization Curriculum in Higher Education / 2002-2004).It is expected that the UFSCar has advanced in the process of incorporating the environmental dimension in the formation of their students, however, we need to analyze, how students perceive the size or environmental issue currently in this HEI? Focus their conceptions can provide subsidies to improve strategies, coordination of academic practices and actions of EE on UFSCar, in addition to fostering researches on environmentalization at HEIs.
