Abstract

Worldwide, Eucalyptus forest plantations are considered to present a high water consumption and, hence, antagonistic to the conservation of water resources. In Brazil, the forest legislation provides that in areas of forest or agricultural production there are areas that must be protected with their native vegetation cover. Thus, despite being a monoculture, forest plantations are most always interspersed with fragments of native vegetation. For this reason, it is necessary to understand whether different proportions of native forest and planted forest can improve the objective of water conservation, and how these proportions can minimize the hydrologic effects of forest plantation management activities, for example, forest harvesting and density of forest roads. Therefore, this study aims at evaluating the influence of forest plantation management on the dynamics of stream water quantity and quality in catchments with different proportions of native forest and plantation forest and with different densities of roads. It is expected that the results of this study may improve the knowledge of the relationship between forest plantations and water in Brazil and may devise alternative forest management strategies aimed at improving water conservation.
