Abstract

The ideal treatment for peri-implantitis should promote health around implants, regenerating the lost tissues and leading to the re-osseointegration. Many studies were conducted, but no study showed significant results in obtaining bone re-osseointegration. The present study will compare the computerized microtomographic and the histomorphometric methods in the re-osseointegration analysis. The re-osseointegration will be investigated comparing implants treated with tetracycline hydrochloride or with antimicrobial photodynamic therapy. Firstly, the bilateral mandibular premolars of 8 dogs will be extracted, after eight weeks, four implants will be installed in each hemi-mandible of each animal. Peri-implantitis will be induced by placing 3.0 silk ligatures around the implants bilaterally during 8 weeks. After 16 weeks with peri-implantitis, will be a microbiological examination and the implants will be randomly treated with: only tetracycline hydrochloride application (G1); tetracycline hydrochloride associated with bone grafting and membrane (G2); only antimicrobial photodynamic therapy application (G3); antimicrobial photodynamic therapy associated with bone grafting and membrane (G4). After 12 weeks the animals will be sacrificed. The re-osseointegration and the other variables will be evaluated clinically, radiographically, histomorphometrically, through the new computerized microtomographic method of the region, in addition, a microbiological comparison will be made by Checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization technique.
