Abstract

Postdoctoral-level research, dedicated to the project of architecture and the city, focusing on the teaching of architecture and urbanism, proposes to study the inheritance of the teachings of the architect Giuseppe Samonà in the construction of the new school of Venice IUAV, between the years of 1946 and 1971 under its direction, and its actuality in the Doctorate in composition from the same school, in years in which was directed by Luciano Semerani, between 2001 and 2011, last living architect who lived the experience, graduating in 1958 with Giuseppe Samonà and beeing his Assistant until 1967. Interested in knowing the Samonà’s school, that became a reference in Europe, its curriculum and innovative teaching committed to reality, the research is also interested in its contemporaneity and affinity with the tradition of teaching with the Faculty of architecture and urban design from Mackenzie Presbyterian University. The research elects five major aspects of Giuseppe Samonà's Didactics, inherent in the construction of a reasoning for the contemporary design: 01. | Architecture and City - the unity "architecture - town planning"02. | Design as research | The relationship between theory and design03. | Knowing the reality | Experience and learning04. | The contemporary value of history05. | The interdisciplinarity06. | The diversity of teacher training. The research project is important to Brazil. The central argument is that the project of architecture and urbanism has not developed an experience in and for the consolidated city that, in most decades of the 20TH century, was limited to Urban Planning that played it's performance in Diagnostics, guidelines, legislation. On the other hand, the urban design did not propose any significant design to this experience. The architects, in turn, contributed mostly to the city's fragmentary structure, performing "remarkable" architectural works. Focusing on education, faced with the need to educate a large contingent of students, we run the risk of proposing a flat instruction. Faced to the contemporary challenges, some schools have not challenged the complexity of the metropolis and the need of coordination between dispersed and multidisciplinary knowledge and the discussions do not propose a reflection about the relationship between design practice and academic performance.
