Behavior of blood pressure and heart rate before, during and after the performance in different yoga positions

Abstract

Several studies have been shown that the regular practice of physical exercises helps the reduction of values of blood pressure (BP) at rest. However, during the practice of exercise, the body suffers physiological adaptations, among them, those related to cardiovascular functions, which can significantly increase the BP, creating risks to practitioners, especially hypertensive, who are more likely to suffer adverse cardiovascular events both fatal or nonfatal. The yoga exercises are recommended for the treatment of hypertension. Studies indicate that the regular practice of yoga can reduce SBP at rest, however, there are gaps in the BP responses during yoga practice, especially those related to yoga postures, called asanas. Therefore, the objective of this study is to verify the behavior of BP before, during, and after the execution of a series of yoga postures. The study will be conducted with 15 hypertensive and 15 normotensive women with no prior experience with yoga, aged e 50 years, users of the public healthcare system. Participants will be submitted in clinical examination (history and BP) and physical (anthropometric). The protocol of the study will be composed of five yoga positions performed randomly. The BP will be measured before, during, and after each posture, with the digital automatic monitor. BP values of the moments will be compared using the repeated measures. SPSS 13.0 will be used for statistical analysis and the significance level will be set at p <0.05.
