Abstract

This project aims to discuss the relationship between translation and adaptation, with focus on the mutability of their boundaries. In this context, we seek to investigate the possibility that the labels of "translation" and "adaptation" may be connected in some way with the image construction of the black characters in two adaptations and one translation of Uncle Tom's Cabin, by Harriet Beecher Stowe. We aim to understand: a) the extent to which the label of either translation or adaptation may exert a particular influence on the image construction of black characters in such rewritings, and b) the extent to which the recent strengthening of racial discourse in Brazil could exert some influence on the latest version of Stowe's work. These issues will be tackled through the comparative analyzes of the selected corpus. The project is justified in view of the lack of studies correlating the dialogue between translation and adaptation and the issue of blackness within the framework of Translation Studies. (AU)
