Abstract

The huge source of natural compounds present in the plant kingdom has contributed to the discovery of organic molecules with the application for the treatment and mitigation of diseases in humans and other animals. Considering the wide spectrum of structures resulting from natural products, only a few molecules are investigated for their biological properties. Among all classes of metabolites, the diterpenes constitute a group of non-volatile substances with 20 carbons, derivated from the geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate that exhibit a wide range of structure and chemical functions. Therefore, genotoxic analysis is an important point when the development of new drugs is considered especially when derived from natural compounds. In the present study, the objective is to evaluate the genotoxicity of three ent-kaurane diterpenes: kaurenoic acid, kaurenol, and ent-methoxy-kaurenoic acid. For this purpose, CHO-K1 cell lines will be used to determine the sub-cytotoxic concentrations using XTT and clonogenic surveillance assays, as well as the comet assay and micronucleus in binucleated cells assay for genotoxicity determination.
