Abstract

The habitat loss and fragmentation, the overexploitation, the pollution and the introduction of alien species have threatened the biodiversity and increased the extinction rates, especially of the mammals. To maintain the biodiversity is one of the main functions of the permanent preservation areas (PPAs), which have been target of a great discussion about its configuration with the approval of the law Nº 12.651/2012 that changed the Brazilian Forest Code. Therefore, this study aims to analyse the maintenance of the biodiversity of the medium and large sized mammals by PPAs localized in a region of intensive agriculture and silviculture at the northeast of the state of São Paulo. The analysis will be based on the calculus of the Wildlife Picture Index (WPI) to sites inside and outside PPAs in three distinct landscapes with important Cerrado remnants and its surroundings in Luiz Antônio, Cajuru, Altinópolis and São Simão. Generalized Linear Models are going to be used to understand which landscape factors are related to the biodiversity maintenance. The WPI are going to be the response variable and the landscape factors the predictors variable (quantities of native vegetation in PPAs, of native vegetation, sugar cane, silviculture and urban areas in the buffer; and distance of roads). The presence/absence data are going to be collected by camera-traps during the dry seasons in 2013 and 2014. Data from direct observation, footprints, feces and vocalizations identification are going to be qualitatively complementary to the inventory. Furthermore, aiming to understand the habitat preference of the ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) inside and outside PPAs, it is going to be investigate which landscape factors affects its relative abundance.
