Abstract

The Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is a serious chronic condition that affects mainly elderly patients with risk factors for atherosclerosis. It is commomly insidious, manifested by intermittent claudication to large, medium and small efforts. The progression to critical limb ischemia is characterized by rest pain, ischemic ulcers or gangrene, which occurs in about 5-10% of cases, and may progress to amputation in 1.0 3.3%. Particularly in the diabetics, who have the chance for developing peripheral atherosclerotic disease 5-15 times larger than non-diabetics, PAD may be associated with severe infections in lower extremities, with difficult rescue of their limbs. Beyond that, the severity of the disease and the lack of prevention policy in the national health system, a large numbers of patients arrive at the vascular surgery services in advanced stages of infection in the extremities, with associated risk of septicemia and death, which imposes the need immediate amputation for these cases. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate retrospectively the primary healing rate of the one-staged amputations and also: demographic profile, morbid past and present conditions of the affected limb in consecutive patients of our University Hospital in the period January 2004 to December 2011, and to compare the results of this group of patients and the results of the patients submitted to two-staged amputations in our service with the same disease (PAD) in the same period.
