Abstract

The philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer was an important landmark in the work of Richard Wagner, is in his libretti or in his articles and essays related to music. Three operas had great influence of this philosophy, Tristan and Isolde, The Ring of the Nibelung and Parsifal, always modifying the librettos for, according to his reading of The World as Will and Representation, could approach the aesthetics Schopenhauer. This project aims to analyze the libretto of Tristan and Isolde during their stay in Leipzig, in addition to the translation of the brief article Über Benennung Musikdrama Richard Wagner for the Portuguese, this article was posted on November 8, 1872, and clearly shows the philosophy Schopenhauer on the hierarchy of music among the other arts. The text Über Benennung Musikdrama yet has no translation into Portuguese, and should be included as an annex to the central thesis linked to this research project abroad. (AU)
