In the process of decision-making, data analysis plays a central role. In cases where geographical information are considered, good visualization of data on maps and diagrams can be of great help. Manually creating maps can be very time-consuming. Moreover, dynamic maps introduce some interactive features that involve updating the visualization frequently. Therefore, there is an evident need for algorithms that can construct good visualizations automatically. In this research project, we will study two optimization problems associated with geovisualization. The first one involves the creation of rectangular cartograms. More specifically, we address the problem of creating sea regions to help preserve the outline of continents. In the second problem, we address the issue of constructing treemaps in the presence of rapidly changing data. Rafael's work will take place at the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e), a leading university in the field of geovisualization. We expect this project not only to make interesting contributions to the addressed problems, but also to enable future research collaborations. (AU)
