Abstract

Generative systems (GS's) are design approaches in which it aims to produce potentials solutions to design problems instead of only one solution. The conception of 3D shapes in architecture shows difficulties such as translating complex shape ideas into virtual data even if when advanced software's are used. In order to provide alternatives to this problem, raises the hypothesis that design of complex structures can be automated by means of rule-based GSs and it can improve the management of cognition aspects that are required for the process. Therefore, the present experimental research aims to propose a method of automation of the generation of space trusses with a high complexity level. As independent variables related to aspects of geometry and materials, we intend to infer about mechanical, static and dynamic structures behaviors. As an approach method plan, four stage procedures are proposed: 1) case studies, reverse engineering and reengineering; 2) development of a GS through computational design; 3) structural tests with virtual and physical prototypes to evaluate the implementation of GS; 4) structural connections possibilities exploration with digital fabrication and rapid prototyping (CAD/CAM). The research infrastructure resources are the three State University of Campinas Laboratories and the Center for Information Technology Renato Archer - CTI, also placed in Campinas city. To evaluate results, will be defined typical design problems to be solved by the GS proposed method and then conclude about the use of generative systems of structural design processes.
