Abstract

Despite the advantages (ease of insertion and ready-availability for use), the Central Venous Catheter (CVC) is related to significant morbid-mortality. Two main CVC-related problems are malfunction (poor flow) and infections. In order to increase the patient safety and the healthcare quality, it is important investments in strategies for patient risk reduction, medication errors, and medicine misuse. Therefore, the use of evidence-based practice is deserved in the medication management process. Some trials compare heparin to trissodium citrate but there is no trial comparing heparin 1.000 U/mL, trissodium citrate 30% and minocyline-EDTA in the same trial. Bearing in mind that heparin 1.000 U/ml is regarded safer than heparin 5.000 U/mL, trissodium citrate 30% has shown efficacy in different trails and the minocycline 3 mg/mL/EDTA 30 mg/mL formulation has shown a cheap and practical option, we purpose a trial of comparison of effectiveness and safety of three catheter-lock solutions.
