Abstract

Acute liver failure (ALF) is a rare condition among children and is followed by high mortality rates. When medical therapy is ineffective, liver transplantation (LT) is considered, which can be from a deceased or living donor. Aggressive and fast treatment is vital for a patient's survival, considering the great number of complications related to this condition. Objectives: To find the relation between ALF cases characteristics, donors data, and data related to the LT itself with the evolution, searching for ways of predicting patients' outcomes. Material and methods: we will perform a descriptive, retrospective and comparative study, based on the revision of medical records from children bearing ALF, admitted and treated at the Child Institute of the Clinical Hospital of FMUSP, from July 1989 to May 2013. The following data will be statistically analyzed: personal data, medical history, factors related to LF (cause, time since diagnosis), signs, symptoms, and exams of the patient over time in which they were hospitalized (hemogram, hepatic enzymes, albumin, presence of encephalopathy, jaundice, renal failure), LT and postoperative factors (if reduced or whole graft, if the deceased or living donor, prioritization, waiting time, time of graft ischemia, biopsies, general complications, survival rates), in addition to donor data (BMI, ICU time, death cause).(AU)
