Abstract Sarcopenic obesity is one of the causes of higher risk for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases development and is involved with the prominent reduction of functional capacity, mobility and vitality in these individuals. Muscle quality decline, systemic inflammation and autonomic dysregulation, known to be associated with obesity, are reportedly related to increased susceptibility to muscle fatigue and therefore worsening of functional performance in this population. In this context, the evaluation of muscle function and functional capacity, metabolic, autonomic and inflammatory status play a central role in the presence of obesity and in setting goals for a program of physical exercise in the obese population. Objectives: The aim of this study is to verify whether the functional capacity in different field tests relates to the parameters of lower limbs muscle strength and endurance obtained by isometric and isokinetic evaluation. Additionally, aims to investigate the relationship between these components and the autonomic balance by heart rate variability and inflammatory and metabolic status by evaluating biomarkers adiponectin, myostatin, leptin, TNF -alpha, plasma glucose, lactate and index MM/MG. Material and Methods: 28 women and 28 men aged between 20 and 45 years will be included. Anthropometric data and body composition by bioelectrical impedance will be taken and level of physical activity investigated via Baecke Questionnaire. Functional assessment will be made by testing six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) and 6 Minute Step Test (6MST), isometric and isokinetic evaluation of lower limbs. Autonomic and metabolic measures will be performed at rest and exercise while analysis of inflammatory markers will be given at rest. Expected results: The hypothesis of this study is based on the prerogative that the proposed tests could identify the main limitation in these individuals as well as suggest the magnitude of the inflammatory process and autonomic imbalance, represented by circulating inflammatory markers and reduced heart rate variability, respectively. Such an investigation is justified to the extent that it will provide information of clinical relevance and may be useful in the implementation of rehabilitative actions and promoting health in obese adults.
