Abstract

Biofilms is considered as etiologic factor of many oral diseases and sustained delivery of therapeutic agents has been developed for oral cavity. However, there are no models that simulate the conditions found in the mouth, such as the presence of bacteria organized in a biofilm. The aim of this study is to evaluate a controlled drug release system containing antimicrobial in presence of patogenic biofilm. A controlled drug release system containing antimicrobial agent (polyhexametilenguanide) will be designed and studies in presence of a patogenic biofilm will be performed. Biofilm of Streptococcus mutans (Gram-positive bacteria associctaed with pathogenic biofilm) will grow for 5 days on glass slides. The biofilms will be exposed to controlled drug release system containing and after biofilm growth it will be collected and homogenized by sonication. Bacterial viability will be determined and controlled delivery system will be analyzed in relation to its mass, integrity and liquid-crystalline phase. Data will be submitted to statistical analysis (SAS software: SAS Institute Inc., version 8.01, Cary, NC, USA), with a significance level fixed at p < 0.05.
