Abstract

The excellent mechanical properties of zirconia (Y- TZP) and excellent optical properties of lithium disilicate make them to be the systems of choice for all ceramic crowns and posterior fixed partial dentures (FPD). However, problems related to fracture persist. The lack of framework support to porcelain and the connector diameter are indicated as possible cause. The present study aims to evaluate through laboratory tests if ceramic framework with conventional or modified design of Y-TZP, as monolithic lithium disilicate of FPD, present statistical difference in reducing mechanical complications such as crack or chipping of the veneering porcelain and connector fracture after receiving axial loads in marginal ridges of a superior FPD [first premolar (abutment), second premolar (pontic) and first molar (abutment)]. Thirty FDP will be manufactured on standardized preparations and divided into 3 groups: group I (conventional framework Y- TZP), group II (modified framework Y- TZP), group III (monolithic lithium disilicate - IPS Emax Press). These FPD will be subjected to cyclic loading in a fatigue machine and submerged in water (1.000.000 cycles or until the fracture - load range at 30-300 N). A ceramic indenter of lithium disilicate (IPS Emax Press) apply the axial load on two marginal ridges. The cycling will be interrupted at a prescribed number of loading cycles (125.000) and FPD will be inspected or for damage accumulation under a stereomicroscope. In the end, fractured FPD will be submitted to scanning electron microscopy and FPD without fractures will be embedded in epoxy resin and sequentially polished for the analysis of the damage. Each sample will receive scores according to the type of failure presented. The Kruskal-Wallis test will be used to verify differences, and the Miller test will be used for multiple comparisons between groups. (AU)
