Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence of spatial structure of landscape on the spatial variability of water quality parameters and on the regionalization of sub basins. The study area is the Piracicaba-Jaguari upper basin, located in the south of Minas Gerais. This watershed belongs to the Cantareira System, which concentrates the main Piracicaba spring waters, use too to supply cities of São Paulo state and the metropolitan area of São Paulo. The proposed regionalization is based on a survey of following sub basins physiographic parameters: morphometric variables, shape, slope, land use). It will be used to provide an estimative of five water quality parameters (WQP) that comprise the Water Quality Index (WQI). This procedure is based on relationship between water quality parameters and physiographical parameters of sub basins, using multiple regression analysis techniques. Multiple regression equations, significant at p <0.05, will be used as predictive models to estimate the parameter values of the WQP for sub-basins that have no data and water quality monitored. Subsequently it will be mapped water quality regions (WQR) that are composed of homogeneous groups of sub -basins based on a feature set formed by the parameters of water quality and physiographic variables of these sub-basins. For the formation of WQR will be tested similarity measures based on distances and correlation coefficients. The F test will be used to assess the significance of differences between the clusters centroids (homogeneous regions) formed by sub-basins. The number of WQR will defining using percentage of change between levels defined during the cluster analysis. The main objective of that method is to estimate water quality patterns in sub-basins which have no continuous monitoring in Brazil.
