Abstract

Apoptotic proteins play a role in cell cycle control and their expression changes during oral carcinogenesis. The aim of this study is to verify the clinicopathological correlation of Bcl-2, survivin and bax expression in exfoliative cytology of chronic smokers, oral mucosa of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and mucosa after surgical removal of OSCC. Patients will be divided in 03 groups: Group 1: 30 patients who smoked more than 20 cigarettes/day/10years with no history of oral malignant neoplasm, or any clinical sign visible at examination. Group 2: 30 patients who had OSCC and Group 3: 30 patients surgically treated of OSCC at least 01 month before. Patients will be examined by history and clinical examination and undergo to cytology. The cytology will be performed using a cytobrush for each selected location. Immunohistochemistry for the selected markers will be evaluated in 100 cells will by light microscopy for intracellular localization. The results will be evaluated statistically by Mann-Whitney and Fisher's exact test. To identify associations between variables the Spearman correlation will be used.
