Abstract

The transverse maxillary deficiency is a complication factor of orthodontic treatment in adult patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate the functional recovery of 30 (thirty) adult patients undergone to surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME), by electromyographic analysis, bite force and efficiency of the masticatory cycles before surgery, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year after SARME. The data acquisition will consist of: recording of electromyographic data obtained from the masseter and temporal muscles at rest and mandibular excursive movements; bite force through the digital dynamometer positioned at the molar region and the efficiency of the masticatory cycles by ensemble average analysis of masticatory cycles of the EMG signal during habitual and non-habitual masticatory process. The SPSS version 19.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) will be applied to compare the groups and differences will be considered significant when p d 0.05. The results of this study can contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of patients undergone to SARME, once the effect of this procedure in the stomatognathic system will be evaluated in a long term period.
