Abstract

Research in literature shows an increase of caries, gingivitis, periodontitis and stomatitis in subjects treated with antipsychotics and antidepressants drugs. However, besides these anticholinergic properties, it is known that antipsychotic drugs and with less intensely, the antidepressant drugs, interfere in all muscles system. It is known that side effects of the use of antipsychotic drugs associated with acute and chronic movement activity such as parkinsonism, akathisia and tardive dyskinesia. Antidepressant medications, classical tricycles, as well as, the new generation, selective inhibitors of serotonin recapitulation have been identified as the cause of muscle side effects similar to antipsychotics drugs. The aim of this study was to analyze the electromyographic activity of masseter and temporal muscles, the bite force and chewing in subjects treated with antipsychotics and antidepressants compared with the control group, because the importance of these functions within the stomatognathic system.
