Abstract Epidendrum Lindl. is a neotropical genus comprising 1.125 species distributed across the southeastern United States (North Carolina ) and Argentina. About 132 species are found in Brazil. Epidendrum martianum L. is a species with resupinate and greenish flowers that may submit or not traces of crimson color. The aim of this study is toinvestigate the floral biology of this species through studies of floral morphology and histochemical tests of allegedly producing regions resources to pollinators. Preliminary tests showed that this species releases floral fragrance which is probably associated to attract their pollinators. It will also be performed to determine the fragrance compounds as well the observation of pollinators and pollination. Moreover, intraspecific manual pollination will be performed (cross-pollination, emasculation, hand self-pollination and spontaneous) and from the fruits we will evaluate the amount of potentially viable seeds resulting from each treatment. The data obtained from this study will be used as a source of data that will contribute to understanding the diversity of pollinators and pollination mechanisms occurring within the genre Epidendum. | |
