Subjective evaluation of masticatory function and oral-health related quality of life in adolescents with and without malocclusions and dental caries experience

Abstract

Dental caries and malocclusion are oral diseases frequently during childhood and adolescence, and it is assumed that the masticatory function can be compromised by the higher number of missing teeth and severity of malocclusion; moreover, these conditions can also negatively affect their quality of life due to the impacts in physical, psychological and social aspects. Therefore, the objective of this study will be to evaluate the perception of the masticatory function and the oral health-related quality of life in adolescents with and without malocclusions and dental caries. One hundred and fifty adolescents, of both gender, aged 12 to 14 yr-old, with permanent dentition, divided in control group (without orthodontic treatment need e without decayed and missed teeth, n=50), group with dental caries (without or with mild orthodontic treatment need, n=50) and group with malocclusions (without filled and missed teeth, n=50). The CPOD index (sum of decayed, missing and filled teeth) and IOTN (Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need - Dental Health Component) will be used to evaluate the dental caries experience and the orthodontic treatment need, respectively. In the group with malocclusions, a qualitative analysis will also be used to verify occlusal, space and dental anomalies, which isolated or in combination, have characterized the malocclusion (Bjork criteria). The Brazilian Portuguese versions of "Masticatory Function Questionnaire" (MFQ) and "Child Perceptions Questionnaire" (CPQ11-14) will be used to evaluate the masticatory function and the oral health-related quality of life, respectively. The results will be analyzed by Shapiro Wilk test and descriptive statistics. The correlation between the MFQ and CPQ11-14 scores will be evaluated by Spearman or Pearson correlation tests in each group. The comparison between MFQ and CPQ11-14 scores among groups and subgroups will be performed by ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests. The significance level will be ±=0.05. (AU)
