Abstract

This project is part of an ongoing process of research being developed at NERA - the Center for Studies, Research and Agrarian Reform Projects - which reflects on the history of socio-spatial and socio-territorial movements and seeks to understand their current actuation and modes of articulation. Increasingly, socio-territorial movements have been organizing themselves in the form of networks, and the use of online social networks by socio-spatial movements is fast becoming an ever more important means for organizing demonstrations and information dissemination on a local and global scale. In light of these trends, we aim to analyze, with a geographic focus, the socio-territorial struggle of peasant movements in Brazil and Argentina since 1988 and the growing socio-spatial urban movement that has emerged in both countries. In particular, we will explore the ways in which online social networks are currently being used in the two countries by socio-spatial and socio-territorial movements and examine the way in which the these networks and their use have changed over time, now representing a new and important dynamic in the struggles of movements. The methodological framework that will be used for this paper includes: conducting fieldwork involving participant observation and oral history; the use of databases; netnography; and data representation in the form of maps, figures, clusters, etc. These methodological elements will be employed with the aim of identifying the developments, ties, actors and other expressions of material and immaterial networks in space and in territories relating to the struggles of socio-spatial and socio-territorial movements. Finally, this analysis will allow us to return to relevant discussions on the following theoretical concepts and categories-socio-geographical movement, socio-territorial movement, space, territory and networks- and provide a valuable contribution regarding their use and meaning at the present conjuncture.
