Abstract

This project addresses the issue of residential segregation in metropolitan São Paulo, taking into account the relationship between race and class. We will highlight, through quantitative research, the differences in residential patterns of blacks and whites who belong to similar social strata, especially the middle and upper classes. Then we will conduct a qualitative study to identify representations about the "place" of certain groups in urban space as well as reveal the ways in which segregation was associated with different experiences and urban trajectories of blacks and whites. The main objective is to build an interpretation of the specific meaning of residential segregation in the context of Brazilian race relations.
