Abstract

In this research, I will comparatively reconstruct the trajectory of "Blacks" and "Japanese Brazilians" in Brazilian society, considering both the broader history of these ethnic-racial groups and the concrete life histories of families belonging to these groups that are now living in São Paulo city. The choice of these two groups is justified not only because both represent - in different senses - ethnic-racial "minorities" in Brazil, but also because each of them experienced contrasting trajectories throughout Brazilian history. This comparative analysis aims two main objectives: first and foremost, contribute to the debate on race relations in Brazil through a broader investigation on the influence of the racial and ethnic factor on Brazilian social stratification; second, escape the tendency to examine the experience of Japanese Brazilians outside the broader context of social and racial inequalities in Brazil.
