Abstract

Brazilian social stratification structure and income inequality has undergone important changes in recent years. Between the second half of the last decade and the middle 2010's, Brazilian working poor went through an upward social mobility period with a promise of integration through consumption. However, the scenario today presents an economic crisis, with increasing unemployment and informality. How is this crisis experienced in the peripheries and how it dialogues with the expectations and projects of those who live in these areas? Looking at the dynamics of economic insertion in the cities, the tenuous boundaries between entrepreneurship, (in)formality and (i)legality have been the object of reflection by urban sociologists. This research project, to be developed at CEBRAP's International Postdoctoral Program - in which the candidate has already been accepted - articulates theories of stratification and social inequality with urban and labor sociology, in order to explore possible interfaces between them in the current moment of crisis. Through a mix-method research, the purpose is to understand the concrete mechanisms - understood as the articulations between particular strategies with structural conditions - that operate in the struggle for economic insertion in the peripheries of São Paulo in a context of crisis. It is planned to analyze both workers in formal markets with their upward and / or downward social mobility trajectories and strategies to deal with unemployment, amid informality and urban illegality.
