Abstract

Aedes fluviatilis is a species of mosquito highly anthropophilic and well adapted to the urban environment. This species was found in abundance in municipal parks in the city of São Paulo. Although this species has not been implicated in the transmission of infections to humans under natural conditions, several studies have shown its vector competence for the yellow fever virus, Plasmodium gallinaceum and Dirofilaria immitis. Microsatellites are polymorphic markers consisting of non-coding regions of DNA with 1 to 6 pairs of bases repeated in tandem. Because they have high rate of mutation and be neutral markers of high variability, the microsatellites are widely used in population studies. Whereas Ae. fluviatilis is a species abundant in the city of São Paulo, with epidemiological interest and scarce information on his bio-ecology and genetic structure, the objectives of this project are: to assess the genetic variability and the gene flow between populations of the mosquito Ae. fluviatilis in São Paulo; to test parameters of microsatellite markers feature in Ae. fluviatilis, previously used successfully in other species of culicidae. It is of great importance to assess the genetic structure of populations of Ae. fluviatilis for a better understanding of their potential epidemiological.
