Abstract

Despite conservation efforts, the biodiversity loss is still happening quickly at regional or global scales, especially in hotspots like Atlantic Forest, due to increasing of disturbances, such as species overexploitation, destruction of habitats, invasion by alien species and large mammals removal. Small mammals play an important role in forest dynamics and they are good indicators of both local and landscape changes. Several conceptual models have suggested that the extinction of large mammals will trigger an increase in the populations of small rodents, due to predation and competition release. Recent studies report that fragmentation and defaunation affect the composition and diversity of small mammals in the Atlantic Forest, however, there is no information about the changes in functional diversity (the value and variation of species and their characteristics that influence the functioning of communities) and phylogenetic (measure the diversity of a community that incorporates phylogenetic relationships of the species) for the Biome. Currently studies also indicate that knowledge of changes in the functional and phylogenetic diversity in different organisms are of highest importance for better understanding: (a) the density and richness presented, (b) the compositions favoring some species, and (c) the several functions performed by the species, altering the functionality and therefore the ecological services provided by the ecosystem. Thus, this postdoctoral project aims investigate changes in functional and phylogenetic diversity of small rodents in defaunated Atlantic Forest landscapes. We will generate and analyze a dataset of traits available in the literature for Atlantic Forest small rodents; and we will calculate phylogenetic and functional diversity values for faunated and defaunated landscapes in order to point out the changes and/or losses in the group. Specifically, we intend to obtain a scenario of functional and phylogenetic diversity for small rodents in defaunated Atlantic Forest landscapes. (AU)
